The folks in my department want me to make the Ideal "Mathematicians installation" of Linux for our departments server. They really like what I have setup one of my machines and want it ported over to the server for everyone on the workstations to use. They also want to switch the workstations to Ubuntu. They also want me to create a few different versions of what I am running to test out on the network and see what the other grads/profs like and dislike. We are currently using Debian, all authenticating to an LDAP server, so I believe that part is already in place.
My Question, to anyone, is would I have to create another image of Linux on the dept server or is this something I could do on any machine, does anyone recommend either? I would think I would need to build part of it on the server however the workstations are all different, so I do not know. I wanted to create two images and save them so that we could test them out, basically the difference being different packages installed. If anyone has good resources, advice, or howtos on this, I would appreciate the references.
