If for some reason you don't want to use a Garmin product, for best results, 
make sure the device looks like a serial port when you plug it into your 
computer. Also make sure the device can output one of the popular formats like 
NEMA 0183, or the Garmin prorietary format.

My sister has a Garmin. I will have to see if there is Linux support for that.
