I honestly don´t remember, but according to our dump, it seems that autofs, then autodirfs, then mntgen was added on Jul 16th, 2002 to our dump.
Looking at Rog´s mail, (Jul 15th) I think that probably I did read his idea on the list and implemented it for Plan 9.
