i noticed the scsi h/a too. the only option for disk is ide; i've
deleted all the nonessential devices.

fyi, i tried it on another older config; it boots on a vm that's
running on an xp based vmware workstation 4; so it probably has
something to do with that controller.

nitpicking: on CD boot i get the following on the console (messes up
rio) until i kill fs or cat /dev/kprint in a window:

upas/fs: wridxfile: '/mail/box/glenda/mbox.idx' no creates

'/mail/box/glenda/mbox.idx' no creates
