Thanks for the help, especially the advice to look on the installation disk.

(The Xcode pkg is something like 3.21 GB. When I started the download the estimated duration was 11+ hours, and over night grew to 4+ days, as the DSL bogged down.)

The installation of p9p was pleasantly uneventful, thanks to some first class programming, mostly by Russ, I believe.

Yes, you need to install Xcode, which you can download by
clicking on the "Mac Dev Center" link here:
http://developer.apple.com/technologies/xcode.html
As Lyndon said, it requires a (free) login.

Alternately, Xcode may be in the Optional Installs
folder on your Snow Leopard installation DVD.
