Nice post, I've saved it for my own reference. I'd only disagree with point 14; 
customizing acme's colors in the source is trivial, easier than rio, although 
it reminds me I should ed-script the color patches on my system. Also...

That's what I do. As well as ^F I appreciate deeply-nested system dirs
all having 3-character names, typing them becomes a rhythm. Even so,
with my fingers it's still not very convenient on a bad day. I keep
meaning to try Xplor.
