I tested you image with an rpi 2w I've lying around, in case you want some 
feedback. I use this hub + usb ethernet device. The connections are pretty 
strong, you can move the cables and the devices are kept attached:

The usb ethernet device is an rtl8153, I recommend you to add it to usbd/usbdb 
(just clone the 8152 line and change it to 8153)
 and recompile usbd and kernel (as we talked 4 years ago, it's scary how time 
goes by), it is 10/100/1000M and very common these days. I added 
ether0=type=usb to cmdline.txt. After running ip/ipconfig using dhcp I had to 
run ndb/dns -r after setting DNSSERVER.  If I don't set this variable the dns 
values at /net/ndb are not used by ndb/dns, I can't resolve names. Of course 
this is without editing /lib/ndb/local. I've had bad experience with the bcm 
wifi in the past (and with other oses), but if you are interested I can test 
it. I'm sorry I can't try your rpi5 kernel. Regards.
