OK, let me make a fool of myself. Is this not $wsys?

And whether it is or isn't, what is it in cpu(1) that clears it when
_I_ use it?

I discovered that the recommended "window -m ..." doesn't work as
$wsys is empty in my cpu session. Is it something I said?

It _does_ work if I restore wsys= after the cpu response. Then I
occasionally lose the plumber (or upas/fs, I'm not entirely sure), but
that's another story.
