i discovered when i resumed work yesterday that it might have been better to continue the displacement activity. it turned out to be cardbus not OHCI that was misbehaving. it's the usual problem with the pc architecture: ``due to the miracles of the bus, it's possible to get [so] far and still be talking to a slot full of nothing''. just amazing.
