Actually symbol versioning is meant to guarantee binary compatibility
by letting you advertise that you've broken the binary interface. 
This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to break the interface..
it just means you have to do more to support it.

But I can see what you mean.  If opening the dynamic library box to
solve the 2 problems I've noted opens up 90 more cans of worms, I'm
going fishing?
