The last time I used vmware worked fine, but it was 4.5.
or you could use qemu instead.

Under vmware:
during installation the graphic mode works ok,
when i use live cd graphic mode works but not ok,
when i have installed the plan9, rio doesn't start, and i have to work in
the text mode shell.
