that was me. don't misunderstand: i quite like the shell, and that wasn't intended to imply that it's not suitable for a great number of things (including, of course, interactive use and one-offs). i suppose i was just disappointed that we couldn't yet really use shell scripts as extensively as they are in plan 9.
unfortunately it's probably not possible to improve things without breaking binary compatibility.
