i'd often mount each distinct underlying thing separately, not just for cache control but to select the right type of connection for each, or to get better bandwidth than could be achieved with just one connection. if a service is aggregating some others, and the connection classes are otherwise the same, then i'd have that service talk to the client side cache services to provide them with its own cache constraints. (and so on)
