I've been maintaining our own version of "hoc" for many years now.
One feature that I noticed the need for is:
        hoc [-e expression] [file ...]
The expression, if present, is evaluated; then the named files are
read and interpreted in order.  If no file or expression is given
or if a filename is "-", hoc interprets the standard input.
