the problem was only being able to save images as bitmap format,,,
seems that when I did XP service pack 2 upgrade, and had some problems, followed by a sys restore which even messed things up a little more. will do a "repair sys install" when I have saved any data that would be bad if lost,... :) anyway thank you for the inputs and hope this will work.
