Sounds like you might have to enable the onboard sound in the BIOS. Depending on your computer you have to hit DEL or F1 when the computer first boots.
Look around for something that is labeled ONBOARD SOUND or something like that and enable it. I don't know what your bios screens would look like, but I bet if you went to HP and put in the model number or serial number you can get some more specific advice on how to turn it on.
