Oh Rupert, that's terrible. Sounds a bit Oirish to me! If I may be permitted in this festive season to elucidate your bear faced misconception:
"Tar" Macadam was in fact a nickname given to John Loudon Macadam, solely as a result of his association with Lord Dundonald's Tar Works in Muirkirk. The tar however was NOT used as a top surface in road construction but it has over the years been accepted as the name given to the tarred top surface on a highway. What the term "Macadamizing" refers to is using "graded" stones for the base, in progressively finer layers. The result is a resilient, smooth top surface with the added benefit that surface water is able to drain through.
