It's a laptop and the mouse is a built-in touch pad.
The cursor movements and ability to highlight, scroll, drop and drag - all
work fine in other programs, like MS Excel.  It is just in MS Word that
we're having the issue.

Bill, The function or, lack of function, is not pursuant to MS Word.  You 
need to check mouse in the 'Control Panel' to see if there are any warnings 
about it.

Also, Have checked, to see if, the mouse is attached securely to the PC?
