To be fair, I only had broadband that was 3mb down....

So for an average speed for a home user, that of course will be a lot
different because I think the base package for yahoo's is like 768kb
down. 

Now, for the cable 3mb down I maxed out at about 350ish per second. It
was good, but it had a tendecy to drop off (thats the downfall of a
cable connection. If no one is really using it, you can get great
speeds. I happen to live 2 miles away from a big university though...)

W/Verizon DSL, I'm getting that 350ish per second again, but its a lot
better because its stable. 

If you have verizon dsl (I'm pretty sure this will work w/out it) go
to infospeed.verizon.net. It'll give you your bandwith speed and what
your download speed should be. If it doesn't work w/out a Verizon
account, go to dslreports.com they also have a great website.
