I spun this around in my mind, after, Phyllis and, N. Thomas, 
responded.  From reading your original post, and their replies, the 
first thing that comes to mind is, there is a crucial setting on the 
laptop that, is ok when the laptop is connected but, when the laptop 
becomes disconnected, it is like yanking a tablecloth off the table 
without, breaking any dishes.  The crucial point is, when, the laptop is 
disconnected from the network.
