I have a 5 year old Compaq desktop PC, using W98SE, and it is so
goobered-up that in a few days I will use its system restore cd's to
do a full restore. Not the first time, but this time I would like to
have some help. I have some questions about how to do it just right.

Before beginning the restore, should a thorough scandisk be run? And
what about wiping the hard drive clean? Is that something I should
do? Should I go out and buy a wipe utility, or download a free one?
I have never used a drive wipe. Killdisk is one I have looked at.

OK, after restore cd's have run, the computer is fresh and ready to
rebuild, how to proceed from that point. I'm not worried about
installing peripherals, or factory supplied programs, or other
software I might have.

What I need to know is, regarding security and performance, is there
a sequence in which certain things need to be done? Such as:

Configuring ISP connection and settings
Installing anti-virus software and downloading updates for same
Installing firewall, downloading updates

FYI: Microsoft stuff; OE browser is IE5.5. I have a cd from MS for
6.0, which is what I have on the machine now. At what point should I
re-install IE6.0? Before or after re-establishing ISP service?
There will be a service pack (a critical update) once that is done.

All of the other critical updates

Recommended updates of my choosing

I have had, but don't have now, Firefox. I would like to download
and install Ff again in the the future. At what point in all of this
should that be done?

Best sequence for all these steps, 1 thru ?? That's what I am
looking for.

One more question: During the re-build of the computer is there a
stage, maybe more than one, where it would be a good idea to run a
scandisk and/or defrag?

Thank you to anyone who can help, John
