Don't know about Ameritech. But the same thing happened to me with a new account with Yahoo Mail---even BEFORE I sent any emails.
Had to open a different account, then before completing the registration, go into their account Info panel and disable a bunch of options that gave Yahoo the option to give out my email address so I could get a lot of nifty stuff. You might check your ameritech account.
