Did you read N Thomas's earlier advice, in particular if you have Anti Virus &
Firewall software,
try turning off AV & FW to see if you can then send mail:
1) Antivirus outgoing mail protection blocking the relay back from the
scanner. Disable the outgoing mail feature to troubleshoot.
2) The SMTP port (25) is being blocked by a firewall. Turn off your
firewall to troubleshoot.
3) The SMTP server was too busy to respond or is temporarily not
available. Try again later or contact the ISP.
4) The address to the SMTP server has been changed: you need to update
your settings. Contact the ISP for the new setting, or may be
available from their website.
Re point 4 of N Thomas, from what I could see on the Blueyonder site they have
been making some smtp
changes, did you have a look at the link I supplied yesterday to check that
your settings are
correct. In particular, here are some of the instructions for OE:
Tools>Accounts>select your account>Properties>Servers
Make sure that the My server requires authentication option is selected
(ticked). If it IS NOT
selected, then click in the small box next to it to place a tick inside it.
If you are configuring an email account where you are using a blueyonder email
address to receive
email, click on the button entitled Settings.... A new window entitled Outgoing
Mail Server should
appear.
Make sure that the Use same settings as my incoming mail server option is
selected (has a small dot
next to it). If it IS NOT selected, then click in the small circle next to it
to place a small dot
inside it.
If you are configuring a non-blueyonder email account (such as an account from
a previous ISP that
you still use occasionally), make sure that you have selected the Log on using
option (it should
have a small dot next to it). If it IS NOT selected, then click the option in
order to select it.
Next, you will need to enter both your username and password.
In the text box entitled Account name:, type in your username, which is your
mailbox name. Please
note that this is NOT an alias name which you may have created.
Remember, if you created an alias name in a mailbox other than your primary
mailbox, then the
username here MUST be the same as the name of the mailbox that you created the
alias name in. For
example, username_2, username_3 etc. Please click here for more information.
In the text box entitled Password:, type in the password for your mailbox.
Click on the button entitled OK to close the Outgoing Mail Server window.
Next, click on the OK button to close the XXXXX Properties window.

Thanks for your help, everyone, regarding the e-mail problem.
Unfortunately, it's still hanging around, like a bad smell.
Since I posted yesterday, I downloaded Eudora, quite prepared to use
it in favour of OE, but it seems to be suffering the same problem.
The error message is a bit more user-friendly, but states essentially
the same thing:
"Error reading from network. Cause: Connnection closed by foreign
host (0)"
So it appears the cause is outside of the mail client, whichever
I'm
using. So OE is off the hook, and presumably all the setting are
okay (otherwise Eudora would work fine now) so I suppose that lets
off blueyonder as well.
Not at all sure what `foreign host' refers to though.
Perhaps
someone's used Eudora and could clarify that?
