As a matter of interest, there are still four applications in my firewall that 
if I block will prevent Windows Update checking my computer - they are

NT Kernel & System
Application Layer Gateway Service
LSA Shell [Export Version]
Generic Host Porocess for Win 32 Services

But you probably know that already.  :-)
