Hi Jim, I have been using Linux for a few months now and as a general OS is most satisfactory. I admit that the mainstream software available with Windows is not there for Linux but many software vendors are slowly offering versions on this platform. The OS I use has included with it hundreds of applications that easily replace Windows equivalents such as for email, browsing, word processing/office apps, photo editing, web page creation etc. etc.
As far as security goes one big advantage is that most of the software is open source and as such can be adapted by anyone to solve security problems who in turn make such adaptations available to all for free. No waiting for MS to sort it! Cost; some versions of Linux are totally free to download and a package like I have is less than $50 for a complete operating system with everything you need!
