OK Jim, most of us here don't have a clue about what you mean by that
last post, sorry mate :( What we do know is that Rick likes Linux and
you like M$, but you aren't really a fan of M$ or something along those
lines so lets leave it at that, especially if you both don't take the
cold steel to the badger in which case neither of you are going to win
the argument.
The way I see it is that Linux is virtually free ... period, and comes
with lots of free software and no constant critical updates, patches,
service packs, AV, FW etc etc BUT it is a bit difficult to use when we
have been weaned on M$. If we started to teach the use of Linux in our
schools instead of M$ or in addition to M$, maybe both OS would compete
on a level playing field.
The other point worth considering is that people in third world
countries can not afford to get on the M$ ladder (OS and other
software), and if they do uncle Bill dumps the OS and introduces a new
one for more mega bucks.
Your paraphrase of Churchill, 'Windows is a very bad OS.... except for
all the others.' I assume comes from his quote about democracy ie
It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except
all the others that have been tried.
Personally, I prefer this Churchill quotation:
Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there
will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending,
ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the
journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and
glory of the climb.
IMHO give Linux a go folks ... enjoy the climb.

Rick,
>> There are dozens of variations of Linux,
Yes and given that the interface is what users confront, I still say
that Linux is many operating system. I don't know whether there has
been more differences among the various interfaces than say among the
various versions of Windows.
