Janet,

> people are not and cannot be expected to be perfect all the time.

I don't expect perfection, it's not about perfection and of if I don't
expect it at all then of coures it's not about all the time.

In fact I don't really expect anything except to be ignored viz a viz
whether people should try to make it easier for potential helpers to help
them.

> Now, about top posting, it works fine if people would trim the excess text

I agree, and it's not top posting that I object to. It's just replying as if
we were all in a single room, talking about the same thing and all knowing
what is being discussed.

>...those who are blind or partially sighted and who have a screen reader,

I admit that I haven't considered that some people in the group might be
visually chanllenged. And it is just dawing on me that some people might not
have English as a first language. But when I really have trouble
understanding what some writers are saying that thought has come to me and I
have tried harder to figure out their messages.

> With top posts, "Window Eyes", or "Jaws" doesn't have to read thru a lot
> of excess text to find the current comment

But don't those people have the same problem as I do, wondering what issue
the top posted lines are referring to, especially since their reader would
have to wade through lines and lines and I don't know what those readers
might do the the '>' symbol that indicates quoted text.

> I think we all have to accept that when something goes wrong with our
> computers we are not always thinking straight

Yes, I know this, my message was intended as a 'heads up'.

> or expressing ourselves calmly, we have to allow that.

It seems to me [and I certainly could be wrong] that by making posts easier
to figure out would improve chances of getting an answer that will help.

> We also have to make allowances for the people who are members of groups
> who we know absolutely zilch about.

It's not about not making allowances, my purpose is to try to help people
shape their messages so that more people understand what the problem is and
what answers might be appropriate. Maybe some, or even most people who post
on this kind of list only come in and ask their questions, and wait for an
answer, then on to using their computers.

> In principle however, I think we all could take your point, up to a point.

If just a few people manage to get better answers because a few people
realize that they have to be clearer then my message will have accomplished
when I intended.
