In Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP: NTLDR and BOOT.INI form the Windows NT bootloader system. This system can accomodate multiple installations of Windows and boot to the appropriate OS on multiple partitons and drives over IDE or SCSI simultaneously.
NTDLR is the bootstrap loader (similar to OS2LDR). It reads the BOOT.INI configuration file and displays a menu on bootup. If only one OS is configured the menu does not appear. When you install Windows XP, Setup automatically can add Windows 98 into the BOOT.INI file, if you choose to keep the installation and create a new install of Windows XP. When you run SETUP, just tell Windows XP which partition or drive it will be installed to and SETUP will configure the rest. NOTE: Windows 98 can't read NTFS, if you install Windows XP on an NTFS partition, you will only be able to copy files across from Windows XP. Windows 98 will only see its own partition and assign no drive letter to the other drive. (Drive letters represent only mounted file systems in Windows; Windows XP can unmount file systems on the fly, except the system partition) --- In [email protected], Rick Maninov <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Is it possible to dual boot two versions of Windows? > > A friend has asked me to upgrade his PC to XP but > wishes to retain 98se.
