I can only speak to what I have, which is a router that shares my Cable
Modem with my three computers. Ihey use ethernet to do this. One
disadvantage if your computer is a little older is that you might have to
buy a NIC, network interface card, for each computer that doesn't have one.
I have used this set up for a number of years and I have had no problems
with it.
