When I first saw KB891711 I was very suspicious Rick, but checked it out and it seemed to be ligit' but did not see the AHH post you refer to which was:
"BTW - There's a critical update for Win98 that is having adverse effects ( makes Win98 less stable ). So if you see KB891711 in the list to download - click to remove it. Apparently it was not made with Win98 in mind and the particular vulnerability isn't a problem with this version of Windows. If you've already got it and are having some problems with Win98 crashing more often then it can be removed using Add/Remove Programs." Having said that, MS Security Bulletin MS05-002 refers to the update as critical but I fiund this in the FAQ section: -------------------------- http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-002.mspx "Vulnerability in Cursor and Icon Format Handling Could Allow Remote Code Execution (891711) After the release of the MS05-002 security bulletin, Microsoft became aware of an issue affecting customers deploying the Windows 98, 98SE and ME security update. These revised security updates are available from Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Customers who have already applied the original Windows 98, 98SE and ME security update are advised to install the current revision of the update from Windows Update." -------------------------- Personally, I haven't had any problems but it certainly looks like this may be Matt's problem so Matt should uninstall his version and install the current revision..
