There's an old conflict among computer people, the hardware people blame the
software, the software people blame the hardware. This could be extended to
the conflict between the OS and the programs. Computers are a system like a
car. Only those who are experienced can spot the cause of veraious problems
easily. And that does not include the novic IT Pros who often havn't as much
a clue as experienced users. It often boils down to certain to the pros or
the experienced users having experienced various problems and remembering
the solution that they found, either by trial and error or by following
someone elses tip.
I had the same experience when I was a broadcast tech and before that when I
repaired home entertainment equipment. I would apply logic and reason and
often the answer was some weird thing. I would remember the solution and
later when I solved a problem someone else was astonished that I found the
problem so easily. I would paraphrase Indiana Jones, 'It ain't the smarts,
it's the milage and the memory.'
We tend to think that so called PC compatibles are mostly the same, but I
don't believe that for a minutes. They certtainly are more similar than
various brands of cars, but they are anything but the same, not even the
same generation, say P3 or P4, etc. In orther words maybe an OS acts
differently on various machines as much because they ARE different as
because the OS is not well written.
