With USB it's not a matter of plugging in a different cord.  USB
requires a USB controller to function.  (Just like parallel and serial
requires a controller too)  The three technologies are all different.

Your only option is to either:
- Obtain a used paralell "backpack" CD-ROM drive.
- Buy a USB controller for the PC Card slot.
