It is pretty simple to do, but depending on your experience, it may take a few tries to get it right. There are a number of ways you can do it, but it depends on who will be accessing the 'private' areas. If you are the only one to access those areas, you can set up file permissions on a specific folder on your site. Typically those file permissions will have the same username/password that you used to FTP into the site, so if other people are going to that area, you don't want to do that. If your hosting server supports PHP there are a bunch of easy methods to direct users to the appropriate area. they put in a user/pass and get to the pages. The simple pages support 1 user/pass and in the more complex ones, you can have a back end database that will support many different usernames/passwords. Do you already have a website? Who are you hosting with, is it a paid or free service. Are you familiar with FTP programs? I can give you more specific advice if I know more about what your project involves, the hosting company, or if your just getting started.
