Hello Jan,
I read your message about finding a good computer friendly accounting software
package. I know Peachtree and Quickbooks. I have used both and recommended
both packages to small business owners depending on the type of business they
own.
Peachtree (now Sage Peachtree and you can not get a trial copy to download) is
a good program if you have a basic working knowledge of accounting. However,
it is expensive and may be a little frustrating if you are not familiar with
accounting terms. You stated you knew little about accounting and taxes.
Take a look at Quickbooks Pro or Premier (you can download a trial copy, go to
www.intuit.com) and see if it meets your needs for both companies. Quickbooks
is easy to learn and written in terms business owners can learn and understand.
Once you know these accounting term, and you find you need more accounting
detail, then you can switch to Peachtree.
Also I advise you to get a consultation with an accounting (CPA) who
specializes in small business accounting. Many accountants and CPAs will work
with you.
I personally use Quickbooks Premier for my ecommerce web site. My financial
information can be imported into Quickbooks from my web site.
Hope this information will help you make your decision.

Thank you so much, Rupert!
I see that Sage Peachtree is highly rated, and not only that, it's on
sale this week for $99.99 after rebate at CompUSA. Sounds like a
winning combination!
I am already running a small business (a massage therapy practice) so
I know a little about accounting and taxes, but my new business (a
publishing company) will be a little more complicated. I may have to
have an accountant to consult with, but I definitely need to do most
of this myself!!
Thanks again! I really appreciate it!
Best wishes,
Jan
