Hello Theresa, Don't know the particular model of scanner you have but it looks like a standard flat bed scanner. I have a similar model to yours but never had much success with slides.
If you own a digital camera, a very effective way of copying slides is to make a simple slide viewer from say a cardboard tube about 6" long and 2 inches or so in diameter. Attach the slide to one end of this tube and your camera lens to the other, hold it up to bright daylight, not direct sunlight and let the camera auto-focus on the slide. It works!!
