USB is a kind of serial port, Universal Serial Bus. I can't make any  
recommendation without more informatoin. Describe this gadget and  
where it is connected. You probably have a serial port on your  
computer, most have at least one. It looks a little like a monitor  
cable, the designation is D something, they generally have two rows  
of pins, one wider than the other. There are two types of connector,  
9 pin is most common, I think the larger one is 24 pins. Been awhile  
since I have seen those. If your gadget has a serial OUTPUT cable you  
might be able to attache it to your computers serial INPUT cable.
