The DOS like function on Windows XP can be an interesting
experience. There are about three ways to get into this DOS
like mode. Press [F8] on bootup, use an XP boot CD, or the
Command in Windows. It is interesting in that you can use
both the DOS function and Windows at the same time and you
can do most everything in both modes. In DOSlike you can
for instance view or copy Data such as pictures to a floppy
or CD. You can recover data to a CD even when you can't
boot into Windows and with Skills and imagination you can
probably repair any OS or software problems. In XP you
need to select "Safe mode with Command prompt" and then
most, but not necessarily all, DOS commands will work.

One useful low tech solution to an OS problem is to type
the following "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe"
(less the quotes) at the "Safe Mode with Command Prompt".
This will lead you into the "Restore Folder" and from the
calendar you can select a "Restore Point" that will hopefully
correct your OS or Boot problem.
