The ASR consists basically of the SAM, some boot files and some other
portions of the registry (and logs).

It is created and updated by using the MS Backup utility. I have not
found the ASR diskettes to be very useful in Windows XP because
Windows Setup has many robust recovery tools and options.

They were however, *very* useful with Windows NT, when they were
called ERD. You created these using a command called 'rdisk'. The
Windows NT Setup had no recovery tools on it except the ERD!
A negative point is because the SAM is copied onto these ERD diskettes
you wouldn't want them to fall into the wrong hands because the SAM
files could be cracked and passwords stolen.
