He said he did that AND it corrupted his disks, too? (Can that be?)

That seems to be the problem.

You are right, that isn't cost effective.

We upgraded from an even older computer. He put XP on that HD (from
install disks he had) and advised me NOT to use a second hard drive
that I insisted he install because it had some pictures and files I
wanted to keep. Yes, there were other options to saving that info
but I was stubborn that what I wanted would work. I do believe
insisting that XP could run some of my old stuff was not in the
computer's best interest :( We had all kinds of little quirks.

symptoms before a HD fails. Did you hear any noise frome the Drive?

Don't know. I don't think the HD failed-he can't get to it. And he
tels me that he can't install the HD in another copmputer because it
is corrupted also.

He is and that has me wondering if he is telling me this to avoid
that responsibility.

That is the conclusion we have come to-
In fairness to this fellow, we purchased another used unit from him
for our adult daughter and it runs like a charm!

OK, so I am going computer shopping. And recommendations or what to
stay away from?
