I recently participated in a thread about someone who had lost files on a hard drive, I forgot about GRC, Stever Gibsons wonderful security site. He has a program called Spinright that is designed to search for lost files. There is a charge and it's not cheap, but Steve is a great security guru and the charge is how he, as he says, keeps the lights on. It's an assembly language program which means that it is very small. Just Google for GRC and check it out.
