Slowdowns can be misleading, that is they can seem to be caused by specific
things, like going to Yahoo. When two things happen at the same time and
seem to be mutually causal I call it 'the ventrilloquism effert', it seems
like the vent. figure is talking because we hear the voice and see the
figures mouth moving. But we know that the 'dummy' is not talking [btw,
ventrilloquists prefer the term figure to dummy.]

Some things that we do on a computer can seem to cause other things and
sometimes we are right. But with computers there's so much going on 'behind
the scenes' that we can't be sure what is causing what.

OK, all of the above was leading up to the fact that slowdowns can be
casused by many things. If the slowdown is moderate it may not be noticable
untill we do something that take a lot more resources than some other
things. Why my machines slow down I first look at what is loaded on startup.
There's a built in program that can help find out what is loaded as the
machine power up. It is 'msconfig'. You can run it from the Start, Run box.
Type in msconfig and hit the enter key. Then click the startup tab. You can
uncheck items to termporarily stop them from running on startup. The problem
is determining which items can safely be uncheckd. Most people say that
nearly all items can be prevented from starting up.

There are two ways to go about this, one is to uncheck items that you know
are not needed then reboot to see whether things seem to be running ok. Then
uncheck more items and reboot again. Or you could uncheck everything and add
back anything that seems to cause problems.

I personally use a program called startupCPL.exe. You can Google for it, or
download it from this groups files section. There is also a file that
contains two sets of documents that explain many if not most of the common
startup items and whether they can be safely be unchecked.
