I don't know why anyone would write malware to remove desktop icons since they have no effect that cannot easily be fixed. To get back My Computer and, if you have it, My Network Places. Just right click the desktop then selected properties, desktop, 'customize desktop. This will reveal a small window near the top with icons that you can click to bring back standard icons like those mentioned above. The other application related icons can be restored by opening the program using the start menus. Then right drag the program to the desktop and select 'create an icon'.
