I think Jock's problem is the file save format rather than the program used to
open the saved documents

I get the impression from the above paragraph that the document looks correct
in
rich text format until he saves it and then it reverts to plain text format so
by default MS Works is saving all his files as text documents, am I correct in
my assumption Jock?

If so, the first quick fix is when you save a file you should see two options
at
the bottom of the save window "File name" and below that "Save as file type"
and
by default the save as file type probably has the extension ".txt". Click on
the drop down menu to the right of the "Save as file type" box and from the
list
that appears select "Word Document *.doc", then save your file.

The permanent fix will be somewhere in your Tools menu but I don't have MS
Works
so I can't provide specific help but if it was MS Word, the fix would be as
follows, which may put you on the right path:

Tools-->Options-->Save ... and there is an option to select the default file
save format e.g .txt .rtf .doc and you would change the default format from
.txt
to .doc, click Apply and OK. Maybe someone here has MS Works and can be more
specific?

The trick here is to set the default program that opens the file. You do
that by right clicking the file, then selecting Open With. Now select the
program that you want to always open the file, this will be based on the
file extension, e.g. .doc. Be certain to also click on the option at the
bottom that says, 'always use the selected program....'
