Hi:
Have you tried from the "safe mode with the command prompt" to run  the
"system restore"  folder?  If you want to try that, I will search  my archives
for the required path to the folder.  When the calendar displays you  can
then select a date from before your problem.  No guarantees but  worth
a try.
 
Or, if you have an XP CD you can do a  "Windows in place upgrade 
reinstallation",  otherwise know as a "repair reinstallation".   The URL
to Windows Support directions is in our recent archives.  This will  
Repair Windows but will not touch the other stuff on the drive.  For  safety
you should still copy the My favorites and documents folders to a  safe
place.
