Or maybe it should be called "Doing the Vista jig"!

Since the Vista DVDs were first offered I have been experimenting with the
developing versions of Vista and have made several installations, both as
upgrades and as dual boot and everything has always been great. Except
last night!

While trying to dual boot my new Gateway with Vista, I was SURE that I
had directed the installation to install on a second partition created for
that
purpose, I either goofed or something went wrong and Vista installed itself
on my "C" drive, taking my Gateway OEM Media Center with it. No great
problem, right? I've got my OEM recovery set. Wrong!

I tried doing an OEM recovery to get my OEM XP Media Center back and
found out how tenacious Vista is. The recovery failed with an error message
"Boot.ini error". The next step was try to reformat "C", also a no go.
Well
there's still F-Disk isn't there? Wrong again. Vista is on a non-DOS
partition and F-Disk only works on DOS partitions. Then I found a program
in
"PC Beginner" that said I could delete everything off a drive to clear it
for an
OS reinstall. Worked great, but it deleted all four of my partitions
including
the OEM recovery partition.

Ha, Ha, LOL. I had copied my OEM partition to a DVD. And, the PC
comes with a Bootable DVD recovery disk, but now, the DVD does not
recover my Laptop as it did before. It only recovers XP Media center
without OEM programs or drivers. So once Windows is reinstalled I
still needed to run my "OEM partition backup" and reinstall all the OEM
drivers and programs one at a time. Then I had to use Partition Magic
and re-create my partitions.

What's the moral here? Make sure you have your stuff saved to a safe
location, and watch what the h..l your doing. And if your going to do
foolish things, do them early in the evening. Bye

Emile.
