  I tried this it appears to work:

  By default a fresh install of XP has only Recycle bin on 
  the desktop. To get the others, Control Panel - Display (or r-click in the 
  Desktop - Properties). On the Desktop page, click customise Desktop, and 
  you will see these other items where you can check boxes to show them, and 
  Apply
