I checked the price of computers locally and I couldn't get one that I
trust for less than $600 or so. I can probably get one online cheaper.

If I should have to buy a new one, any recommendations on brand? Are
Compaq's still proprietary? We have Dell at work. I'm not real fond of
HP.

Though there much maligned, I have not had a minutes trouble with my cheap
lil Emachine in 2 and a half years. My other computer bought a little over a
year before had similar specs costs over 60% more, a Tiny, was absolute
rubbish, so I bought the Emachine as backup. The Emachine runs 24/7, perhaps
I
just got a good one, but I praise its cheapness and reliability.
