Hello Group,
I recently started a non-profit computer workshop. We accept
donated computers from business and the public, then I look over the
computers and do a basic diagnostic on them. The usable ones I try to
get into good shape and then re-donate them back to needy families in
the local community. The ones that aren't worth fixing I recycle. Kids
help in the process, learning about computers and we even make
"computer art" out of some of the old pieces/parts. I have a deal with
Microsoft where we get copies of Windows XP for $5.00 a copy for use
in the refurbished computers.
I'm still learning a lot but I have I suppose a better than average
knowledge/skill level. I usually can get things going OK but need help
often on some of the tougher problems.
There's grant money available for spare parts and software and what
I'd like to ask the group here is what are a few basic, good programs
that I could buy to help me trouble shoot and do diagnostics on these
donated computers? There's so many to choose from and they all seem to
promise that there's is the best product. To avoid the lengthy process
of trial and error I was wondering if you folks could suggest a few
programs that that I could use to help me diagnosis and fix these old
computers?
I'd sure appreciate your suggestions. Also I'd be happy to share
what I know and what we do with anyone interested in doing something
similar in your local community. Thanks again guys. Look forwards to
hearing from you. Live well,
Jeff Barker
