If you bought your computer from one of the major suppliers they most probably will have also included in that original load a copy of the MS suite Microsoft Works for you to use Word Processing. Speadsheet or Database This is recognized as a beginners version of the more powerful Microsoft Office, but these days having all the necessary features If you want to update this package to the more powerful version but find that price put you off consider downloading the free Open Office suite from http://download openoffice.org/. Download help is available on their web site or from people in this group. Because of the commercial partnerships in force you will also have installed a copy of Norton Virus protection of more likely now a copy of McAfee Virus protection. Depending on the contracts involved between the companies, you will have this on a one years free use. To continue to enjoy the protection offered after one year, you will need to pay a yearly fee by going to the web site. While you may find other special offers on this theme, this is the usual way of providing instant protection and encouraging good practice on new computers. Later you may wish to change this protection and chose another product of a free one from AVG at http://www.avg.co.uk/doc/welcome of from Avast at http://www.avast.com/ Also loaded will be various Internet Service Providers desktop icons that will take you to their web site to sign up. You will probably see one from AOL and maybe one or two others. You may want to change providers to one of those by clicking on their icon or they can be safely deleted if you have no intention of using their services. Windows comes with a built in Firewall that will be operating by default. This will help protect you from outside attack on your Internet connection. Better protection could be provided by other Protection applications but you have time to consider those later. Small Builders, Self Builders or Second Hand. You may have got your computer from one of those small suppliers who may have built the computer locally or bought a second user computer or even decided to have a friend build one or have a go yourself. Either way, you may need to think about Virus protection before you do any more web roaming. The free virus protection packages combined with the Windows firewall would at least give you some degree of protection. You may also want to try Open Office until you decide to upgrade to something else. .
