Online Virus Scans

After reading the constant negative comments and claims on these list that
all online virus scans are just outright scams, designed to get you to buy
products, I decided to run one of my tests again. As you know, I only use
one product, Panda Virus Protect and Firewall, on my computers and believe I
have no hidden viruses. I often run tests on services like this.

I shut Panda down on my computer and ran four online scans. Symantec/Norton
Avast and AVG appear to have stopped offering this service. So I used Nod32
Kaspersky, Trend Micro and Bit Defender.

Each scan gave a very similar service offer. To Detect virus and malware and
to REMOVE it but made a point of saying the scan DID NOT PROTECT.

Each scan offered their own protection products during the process, but at
no time suggested that I needed them to complete the scans work.

1. Nod 32

Needed a download of their “Eset. Spd.SRO” program to run.

272137 files scanned in 34.03 minutes
Detected 0
Removed 0

2. Kaspersky

Required the full program download, Kav 6.0.3837 sosen.exe

308986 files scanned in 51.06 minutes
      Detected 0
      Removed 0

3. Trend Micro

Needed to use either a Browser or Java on your computer.

297342 files scanned in 37 minutes
     Detected 1 adware. ADW_BHO_JZ
Removed 1

3. Bit Defender

Installed an Anti Virus Engine and virus signatures to run.

280173 files scanned in 49 minutes
Detected 2 virus 1 infection. No indication of what?
Removed 3

I had to delete the Kaspersky program before I could do the second test and
at the end found no residue program material from the other tests.

I turned Panda back on afterwards.

I was not surprised at these results. The clear scans from the first two
proves at least that they were not just after my custom. The detected virus
and adware was also not a surprise because I had by then been without
protection for some 3,50 hours.

I guess some folk here will say it proves nothing or that I have falsified
or even lied but I think it proves that this is a valid service.
